Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is at the centre of a storm in his native Croatia, with fans of the national team demanding that the Champions League winner step down as captain.

Controversy

The stand on the part of a large number of supporters of Ante Cacic’s side relates to the recent decision of Modric to stand in court in defence of Zdravko Mamic, a hate figure amongst fans of Croatian football.
Mamic has previously been accused of taking up to 20 million Euro from Dinamo Zagreb, during his stint as President of the club.

Slammed

Modric has also been accused of receiving a sum of money following his sale to Tottenham from Dinamo in 2008, part of which he then passed back to Mamic.
